Academic literacy is the ability to understand and contextualize the academic vocabulary required in post-secondary education.

Academic literacy practices are used and assessed in classrooms and may require students to analyze, summarize, compare, contrast and synthesize ideas and related information from a wide variety of sources.

Academic literacy refers to being proficient in reading and writing about academic subjects.

Being able to discuss and analyze formal, academic and subject-specific jargon allows academically literate individuals to productively contribute to ongoing conversations within specific academic fields.

It allows for meaningful contributions to a field of study.
